Surgical oncologist Dr Arun Kumar Giri said "saree cancer" is a rare skin cancer that develops along the waistline due to wearing sarees tightly around waist for years. Constant friction and irritation from the petticoat string can damage skin and trigger malignant changes, he said. Two such cases were documented in the Journal of the Indian Medical Association in 2011.
